On acidic soil, between mosses, often over siliceous rocks.

Two chemotypes are known from the study area: C. ciliata s. s. [syn.: C. leucophaea Abbayes] without usnic acid, and C. ciliata f. flavicans (Flörke) Ahti & De Priest [syn.: Cladina ciliata f. tenuis (Flörke) Ahti, syn. Cladonia tenuis (Flörke) Harm., C. ciliata var. tenuis (Flörke) Ahti] with usnic acid.
