On exposed, siliceous rocks in natural and artificial habitats, locally common on roofs, rare on sandstone.

The morphologically slightly different chemotype Neofuscelia delisei (Duby) Essl. [syn. Parmelia pulla var. delisei (Duby) H. Magn., P. delisei (Duby) Nyl.] is sometimes recognized as a distinct taxon. It is known from Belgium Ard.: R.
