Syn.: D. bryophilus (Ach.) Zahlbr., D. scruposus var. bryophilus (Ach.) Müll. Arg., var. arenarius (Ach.) Müll. Arg., var. parasiticus (Sommerf.) Zahlbr., f. dealbatus (Ach.) Zahlbr., f. plumbeus (Ach.) Zahlbr.

Initially lichenicolous on Cladonia squamules (especially C. pyxidata subsp. pocillum and C. symphycarpa), later forming an independent thallus and spreading over mosses and soil, on calcareous soil and sand in open, dry and sunny habitats.
